Disappointment Over Tyler Cowen’s Take on the JFK Assassination

Anyone familiar with Tyler Cowen knows that he has been blessed with a brilliant and analytical mind. Such being the case, I was particularly interested in reading his Bloomberg article “How to Test Your Favorite Conspiracy Theory,” at least insofar as it related to the assassination of President John Kennedy. I wanted to see how Cowen applied his legendary analytical skills to that seminal event in U.S. history. Alas, after reading the article, I was left with nothing but disappointment. Ever since the federal government was converted into a national-security state after World War II (without a constitutional amendment authorizing the conversion), it has been the Pentagon, the CIA, and the NSA that have run the government, just like in countries governed by military dictatorships. The federal government’s arrest of former CIA agent Jerry Chun Shing Lee for allegedly spying for China confirms, once again, that for the U.S. national-security branch of the federal government, the Cold War never ended. Yesterday, the New York Times reported that Lee is suspected of having revealed the existence to Chinese authorities of Chinese citizens who were serving as spies for the U.S. national-security establishment. Those Chinese citizens, not surprisingly, were subsequently executed by Chinese officials for serving as spies for the U.S. government. Wait a minute!
