The Stronger the Government, the Weaker the Nation

by
For all of our lives, it has been the aim of most Americans to make the federal government stronger, especially with respect to the warfare state. The principal justification for an ever more powerful government is that it keeps the American people safe from the likes of terrorists, drug dealers, communists, illegal immigrants, Russians, Chinese, Iranians, North Koreans, and Muslims. Moreover, it is argued, a powerful military-intelligence establishment enables the U.S. government to violently police the world and thereby earn respect and credibility from foreign regimes. What hardly anyone notices about this big-government shibboleth is the price that is paid for it: a weak nation. Licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license. For example, no one can deny that the American people, despite living under the most powerful government in history, are among the most frightened people in the world. This phenomenon was ...

Medicare & You

by
Although I am not quite old enough to qualify for Medicare, I recently received in the mail a 131-page large-size book titled Medicare & You 2024: The Official U.S. Government Medicare Handbook, published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Turns out that the book was intended for a previous owner of my house who evidently was soon eligible for Medicare. HHS The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) “supports and implements programs that enhance the health, safety, and well-being of the American people.” HHS “strives to provide all Americans with high-quality healthcare and social services.” It also fosters “sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services.” HHS has 12 operating divisions that “administer a wide variety of health and human services and conduct life-saving research for the nation, protecting and serving all Americans”: Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Administration for Community Living (ACL) Administration for ...

Push the Button

by
Ever since I founded The Future of Freedom Foundation 34 years ago, I have argued that what we need to do to restore freedom in America is immediately end all infringements on freedom. In other words, if there was a button that could be pushed that would bring a sudden and immediate end to all welfare-state, regulatory, and warfare-state programs,  I would not hesitate to push it. Over the years, I have received two major critiques of my position: (1) It would produce chaos by suddenly ending economic programs that have become an integral part of American society; and (2) There would be people dying in the streets who have become dependent on government largess. Permit me to set forth two examples that address those two points. The NRA In June 1933, the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration enacted a program called the National Industrial Recovery Act, which was administered by a new agency called the National Recovery ...

Reform, Replace, or Repeal?

by
The U.S. government is a monstrosity. With its four million employees and annual budget approaching $7 trillion, there is no other way to describe it. The federal government contains a myriad of agencies, bureaus, corporations, offices, commissions, administrations, authorities, and boards, most of which are organized under 15 cabinet-level, executive-branch departments headed by a secretary: for example, Health and Human ...
