Why Are Republicans So Upset about Obamacare?

by
Although Republicans have talked incessantly about repealing Obamacare since the day it became the law of the land, they were for Republican versions of it before they were against it. They are for Republican versions of it right now. And they wholeheartedly support government intervention into the health-care and health-insurance industries that are even worse. In the recent Supreme Court case of King v. Burwell, the Court once again upheld a legal challenge to Obamacare (the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act). At issue this time was whether federal subsidies were available for purchasing health insurance under both federally run and state-run health-insurance exchanges. The Court ruled that they were, even though the letter of the Obamacare law says only that subsidies are available to those “enrolled in through an Exchange established by the State.” Previous to that, in the Supreme Court case of National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (2012), the Court upheld the Obamacare ...

Republican Hypocrisy on Planned Parenthood

by
Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the country. Although the organization also provides sexual and reproductive health care, education, and information to 2.7 million women (and men) annually through its approximately 700 health centers throughout the United States, Planned Parenthood is generally criticized by Republicans — the vast majority of whom are pro-life — only because it performs abortions. Most recently, after the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress released secretly recorded videos of Planned Parenthood’s medical director supposedly talking about selling fetal tissue for profit, which is illegal, Republicans have been calling for Congress to cease funding Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood has received federal funding since 1970 through Medicare and the Title X Family Planning Program administered within the Office of Population Affairs (OPA) by the Office of Family Planning (OFP) — all part of the Department of Health and Human Services. According to Planned Parenthood’s 2012-2013 annual report, the organization received $540.6 million (about 45 ...

Eighty Years of Socialism

by
Social Security reaches an important milestone in August of this year. The Social Security Administration is celebrating 80 years of “public service” with a tree-planting ceremony at the agency’s headquarters in Baltimore, a public-policy discussion in Washington, D.C., and activities at sporting events across the country. The Social Security Administration is celebrating 80 years of socialism. With little opposition, bills to establish the Social Security system were passed by the U.S. House and Senate in April and June of 1935. After acceptance of the final conference report by both houses of Congress, a bill (H.R.7260) was sent to Franklin Roosevelt on August 9, 1935. It was an Act to provide for the general welfare by establishing a system of Federal old-age benefits, and by enabling the several States to make more adequate provision for aged persons, blind persons, dependent and crippled children, maternal and child welfare, public health, and the administration of their unemployment compensation laws; to establish a Social ...

Conservatives Just Don’t Get It on Taxes

by
Now that the Republicans have regained the control of the Senate that they lost in the 2006 midterm election, conservatives are salivating about the prospect of “real” or “genuine” tax reform. Conservatives believe that reforming the tax code by making it more efficient, more coherent, more transparent, and more equitable; eliminating the double taxation that discourages saving and investment; eliminating ...

The Root of Support for the Drug War

by
Although many states have legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes, some states have decriminalized the possession of certain amounts of marijuana, and four states (Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington) have legalized the recreational use of marijuana, bipartisan support for the drug war throughout the United States continues unabated and unquestioned. Why? Why do so many Americans think that the ...
