Republicans and CAFE Standards

by
The auto industry won’t be meeting the U.S. government’s 54.5-mile-per-gallon (mpg) fleet average fuel economy target in 2025. But neither will it have to. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) last month released for public comment a draft Technical Assessment Report (TAR) for light-duty vehicle Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and Green House Gas (GHG) standards for vehicle model years 2022–2025. The report takes the 54.5 mpg goal off the table. It turns out that low gas prices have increased consumer demand for SUVs, crossovers, and light trucks — all of which get lower gas mileage than cars. Car-manufacturer fleet fuel-economy averages are sales-weighted. The original 2025 standard assumed that cars would make up two-thirds of the new vehicles sold that year and that SUVs, crossovers, and light trucks would make up one-third. The government now estimates the overall fleet average fuel economy will be between ...

Government Licensing or Private Certification?

by
Everyone understands the need for children to obtain permission from their parents before undertaking certain activities: sleeping over at a friend’s house, viewing a particular movie, going on a field trip, participating in some sport, attending a particular party, staying up late, playing a particular video game, making a major purchase at a store, surfing the Internet, or having some medical procedure. Whether the issue is safety, security, fiscal responsibility, liability, or morality, it is generally true that father and mother know best. Even when it is grandparents, older siblings, or other relatives that are the ones granting the permissions, it is still generally true that the families of the children know what is best for the children, not the children’s friends, schoolmates, teachers, and neighbors. But since government is not a parent, or even a babysitter, a caretaker, or a nanny, why is it that adults must get permission from it to open a business, engage in commerce, work in ...

Not a Better Way

by
House Speaker Paul Ryan has come out with yet another one of his plans. As chairman of the House Budget Committee, he oversaw the release of numerous plans to reform the welfare state and strengthen the warfare state. His newest plan, A Better Way: Our Vision for a Competent America, is more of the same. Needless to say, it is not a better way. A Better Way was issued over the course of last month in six parts. Each part focuses on a particular issue: June 7: Poverty, Opportunity, and Upward Mobility June 9: Achieving U.S. Security Through Leadership & Liberty June 14: The Economy June 16: The Constitution June 22: Health Care June 24: Tax Reform Each component of A Better Way contains a “full task force report” between 22 and 57 pages and an abbreviated “snapshot” or “fact sheet.” Some components also include “by the numbers” or “frequently asked questions” documents. In what follows, I ...

Conservatism and Libertarianism

by
When conservative politicians are trying to get the votes of libertarians and “libertarian-leaning” Republicans, they often tout the supposed affinity between conservatism and libertarianism. They claim that there is a conservative and libertarian confluence of thought on many issues. They maintain that because the real enemy of conservatism and libertarianism is liberalism, conservatives and libertarians stand on common ground. ...
