Asking the Wrong Questions

by
In the 1968 presidential election that pitted Democrat Hubert H. Humphrey against Republican Richard M. Nixon, American Independent Party candidate George C. Wallace famously quipped that there was not a dime’s worth of difference between the two major political parties. Since Wallace made that observation, we have had every conceivable combination of Democrats and Republicans in the White House, the Senate, and the House.  We have seen Democrats control both Houses of Congress and the presidency, Republicans control both Houses of Congress and the presidency, a Democrat in the White House while Republicans controlled both Houses of Congress, a Republican in the White House while Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress, a Democrat in the White House while Democrats and Republicans each controlled one House of Congress, and a Republican in the White House while Republicans and Democrats each controlled one House of Congress.  But no matter what the political party combination has been, the ...

A Massive Transfer of Wealth

Even though the Republicans had majorities in the House and Senate during the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency, they failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare, or to “repeal and replace” it with something better. President Trump recently announced that he is backing off plans to introduce a Republican replacement for Obamacare after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “privately warned him that the Senate would not revisit health care in a comprehensive way before the November 2020 elections.” Trump then issued three tweets about it: The Republicans are developing a really great HealthCare Plan with far lower premiums (cost) & deductibles than ObamaCare. In other words it will be far less expensive & much more usable than ObamaCare. Vote will be taken right after the Election when Republicans hold the Senate & win back the House. The Republicans’ last attempt to replace Obamacare was in 2017. ...

Conservatives, Libertarians, and Family Leave

by
Former president and conservative icon Ronald Reagan (1911–2004) famously said about conservatism and libertarianism in 1975, If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals — if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is. Nothing could be further from the truth, of course. When conservative politicians try to get libertarians and “libertarian-leaning” Republicans to vote for them, they tout the supposed affinity between conservatism and libertarianism. Conservatives will even use libertarian rhetoric to portray themselves as advocates of libertarian principles. But their mantra of the Constitution, private property, the ...

We Have a Farm Bill

by
We have a farm bill — finally. The previous farm bill (The Agricultural Act of 2014) expired on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018. Although this left several agricultural, environmental, conservation, and nutrition programs in limbo, they were kept alive through continuing appropriations bills. Every five years, Congress passes a farm bill that sets national agriculture, nutrition, conservation, and forestry policy and appropriates ...
