A Dictionary of Libertarianism

by
Libertarianism, from A to Z by Jeffrey A. Miron (New York: Basic Books, 2010); 198 pages. More and more Americans are coming to realize that the liberal/conservative paradigm is deeply flawed. Disillusionment with Washington is at an all-time high. The old adage that there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the two major parties has never seemed more true. The political philosophy of libertarianism is an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional Left/Right trajectory. Yet libertarianism is often misunderstood and mischaracterized by its opponents as discounting human nature and disdaining morality while being grossly naive and overly utopian. That is no doubt in part owing to the failure of proponents of libertarianism to properly understand and clearly articulate the libertarian philosophy. Harvard University has never been known as a bastion of libertarianism. But Jeffrey A. Miron, a senior lecturer and the director of undergraduate studies in the Harvard economics department, is also a senior fellow at the libertarian Cato ...

How to Make America Exceptional Again

by
In his State of the Union address, President Obama raised the issue of tax cuts for the rich, one of the big battlegrounds between liberals and conservatives. Yawn! Conservatives: “Lower taxes for the rich! Make the cuts permanent!” Liberals: “Raise taxes on the rich! Make the increases permanent!” Do you see what I mean when I say that there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between liberals and conservatives? The government keeps the rest and takes care of people with it. It’s the paternalistic state in action. Sometimes our federal daddy ...

Monday, January 31, 2011 U.S.-Supported Tyranny in Egypt Among the people who might be most disturbed about the popular revolts in the Middle East are public schoolteachers across America. No, not because they necessarily oppose popular uprisings against brutal dictatorships but rather because they’re likely to be hit by an uncomfortable question from their students. “Ever since the first grade, we’ve been taught that the U.S. government is exceptional because it is a democracy-lover and a democracy-spreader. Now, all we’re seeing on television, the newspaper, and the Internet is that the U.S. government is the world’s most ardent supporter of dictatorships in the Middle East. Who is lying — our teachers or the press?” The truthful answer would be: It’s the state that’s been lying. The popular revolts in the Middle East are exposing the lies, myths, and delusions that have long characterized U.S. foreign policy. By now, everyone knows that the Egyptian people have been suffering under a brutal unelected dictatorship for some ...

Liberals, Conservatives, and Libertarians: What’s the Difference?

by
People sometimes ask what the differences are between liberals, conservatives, and libertarians. The primary differences are moral and philosophical. Libertarians believe that people should be free to live their lives any way they choose, so long as their conduct is peaceful. Liberals and conservatives believe that people should be free to live their lives any way they choose, so long as ...
