The Political Economy of “Exporting” Democracy

by
In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson justified the American entry into World War I on the ground that it was necessary to make the world “safe for democracy.” Since that time, U.S. presidents have used this same line of reasoning to justify military interventions around the world. More than eight decades after Wilson’s decree, George W. Bush stated that “it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.” And a 2011 White House press release noted the Obama administration’s commitment to the “goal of helping provide the Libyan people an opportunity to transform their country, by installing a democratic system that respects the people’s will.” Promoting regime change in the name of democracy and freedom sounds noble and heroic to many. But rarely, if ever, do politicians, citizens, and pundits consider whether the U.S. government can ...

Two Police State’s War on America

by
Battlefield America: The War on the American People by John W. Whitehead (SelectBooks, 2015), 352 pages. John W. Whitehead is among the most dedicated and articulate civil libertarians of his generation. His latest book, Battlefield America: The War on the American People, is a cogent argument that today the clear and present danger to Americans and their freedom is government. Battlefield America argues convincingly that the American people have docilely accepted a police state — that while we were entranced by the news media’s continual, color-coded warnings of terrorist attacks, desensitized by gradual exposure to increasingly militarized police, and eagerly awaiting the next iPhone, we missed the materialization of a fully developed police state right before our eyes. Freedom has not been wrested from us violently, Whitehead argues, but relinquished voluntarily, for “a cheap price: safety, security, bread, and circuses.” Battlefield America’s grim story, accented by references to Blade Runner and The Terminator, shows government power without shackles, primed ...

FFF Update on Projects and Events

by
I thought I would give you an update on recent and upcoming activities here at FFF: 1. On Saturday, October 10, I am speaking at a conference on U.S. foreign policy at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth sponsored by The Texas Millennial Institute, an organization of young libertarians in Texas. It promises to be a fantastic conference. It certainly couldn’t be more timely, given the ongoing chaos and fiascoes that U.S. empire and interventionism have brought to the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Ukraine as well as the ongoing militarism and infringements on civil liberties that now characterize the United States. Other speakers are Ted Galen Carpenter (Cato Institute), Angela Keeton (antiwar.com), and Scott Horton (Antiwar Radio). Admission: FREE. For more information: https://www.texasmillennialinstitute.org/make-conversation-not-war-a-summit-on-foreign-policy/ ****** 2. Mark your calendar: Saturday, November 14. You are invited to what might well be the most meaningful conference in the 25-year history of The Future of Freedom Foundation. We are hosting a conference entitled “The ...

Agenda for a Freer and More Prosperous America

by
There is little that happens in society in general and the market economy in particular that most on the political “left” do not think needs more government intervention, regulation, and redistribution to make “better.” One recent example of this is a lengthy “report” primarily prepared by Nobel Prize-winning economist, Joseph E. Stiglitz, for the Roosevelt Institute. Released in June 2015, ...
