Qualified Immunity Is How the Police State Stays in Power

by
What’s been most striking to me is just how one-sided the rules are when Americans take on their own government…. It has been dismaying to learn the extent to which rules and laws shield the government from accountability for its abuses—or even lawbreaking…. It’s been a long and frightening lesson…. The rules seem rigged to protect government lawlessness, and the playing field is uneven. Too many processes favor the government. The deck is still stacked. —  Journalist Sharyl Attkisson The system is rigged. The system is rigged, the government is corrupt, and “we the people” continue to waste our strength by fighting each other rather than standing against the tyrant in our midst. Because the system is rigged, because the government is corrupt, and because “we the people” remain polarized and divided, the police state will keep winning and “we the people” will keep losing. Because the system is rigged and the U.S. Supreme Court—the so-called “people’s court”—has exchanged ...

Why Do Libertarians Support School Vouchers?

by
For the life of me, I simply cannot understand why some libertarians still support school vouchers. Libertarianism, after all, is about achieving a free society. What do school vouchers have to do with freedom? They are the very antithesis of freedom. A genuinely free society necessarily entails getting government out of education entirely. It entails getting all government — federal, state, and local — out of education. Most libertarians know that too, even if it’s only on an instinctive level. And there is the rub. Some libertarians just won’t go that far. They’ll call for abolishing the U.S. Department of Education but they’ll back off from calling for the separation of school and state at the state and ...

Thomas Sowell at 90: Understanding Race Relations Around the World

by
The issue of race relations in America has reached a new high pitch with the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis policeman, followed by mass peaceful demonstrations and instances of violence, looting, and arson in cities around the country. A new soul-searching on matters of race and racism are now, also, impacting a growing number of academic and professional fields, including the economics profession. On June 5, 2020, the American Economic Association (AEA), the premier organization among economists in the United States, issued a statement saying that it was time for officers and governance committees within the Association to look into racism and racist practices and presumptions within the profession. It was pointed out that while black Americans make up 13 percent of the nation’s population, only 3 percent of economists who are members of the AEA identity themselves as black, and 47 percent of those surveyed said that they experienced instances of discrimination within the profession. A Limited Race ...
