The Statist War Over Public-School Books

by
NOTE: Our ongoing conference on civil liberties continues this evening with a presentation by the inimitable Judge Andrew Napolitano, one of the most ardent and eloquent defenders of civil liberties in our time. You don't want to miss this one! Via Zoom at 7 p.m. Eastern time. To receive a Zoom link, register at our conference web page. A Q&A session will follow the judge's talk. I will be the moderator. I hope to see you there for what promises to be another fantastic presentation. ************ Statists all across the country are going to war with each other over which books will be permitted to be placed in public (i.e., government) school libraries. Their mindsets are so mired in statism that they cannot see there is no possible way to resolve their war in a way that will make everyone happy. What they fail to realize is that their basic paradigm for education — that the state ...

The Real Lessons of the Afghanistan Disaster

by
I will never forget a formal dinner I attended shortly after the 9/11 attacks. It was sponsored by a conservative-oriented libertarian foundation. There were hundreds of people in attendance, mostly conservatives and conservative-oriented libertarians. There was no doubt about where most everyone at that dinner stood: They were fully in support of President Bush’s plan to launch the “global war on terror” and to invade Afghanistan. After the dinner was over, I was waiting for my car to be brought to me when I saw a friend of mine who was working at the conservative Heritage Foundation. I asked how things were going. He didn’t hesitate. He told me that they were jumping right into supporting Bush’s “war on terrorism” with “position papers” that they were already writing and publishing. Shortly after that dinner, I delivered a speech at a libertarian gathering in Arizona. I explained how U.S. foreign policy was the motivating factor behind the 9/11 attacks and why it ...

Don’t Reform the IRS. Abolish It Instead.

by
A commentary in the New York Times today demonstrates how different libertarians are from conservatives. The article, entitled “How Not to Reform the IRS,” is written by Pete Sepp, president of the National Taxpayers Union. Founded in 1977 by James Dale Davidson, the NTU is a longtime conservative organization devoted to tax reform. In his article, Sepp states, “More resources for customer service, taxpayer rights safeguards, a functioning Oversight Board, actionable and regularly-updated research on the tax gap, and innovative approaches such as the recently proposed enforcement fellowship pilot program are all solutions that should unite Washington — just as concern over taxpayer rights has for over 30 years.” Additional resources for IRS enforcement and proposals for income-tax reform might unite the politicians and bureaucrats in the nation’s capital, but they are a far cry from a genuinely free society, which is what unites us libertarians. As ...

Constitution Day 2021: It’s Time to Make America Free Again

by
“That was when they suspended the Constitution. They said it would be temporary. There wasn't even any rioting in the streets. People stayed home at night, watching television, looking for some direction. There wasn't even an enemy you could put your finger on.” — Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale The Constitution of the United States represents the classic solution to ...
