An Old Geezer on Learning about Liberty and Its Loss

by
I am now in my 70s. No longer a spring chicken but not a dead duck yet either, with, I hope, a few good years left. When I was in my mid 20s, I had the opportunity and good fortune to meet and interact for most of two summers with the noted Austrian economist and Nobel Prize winner Friedrich A. Hayek (1899–1992). He was in his mid 70s at the time, and he seemed ancient to me. Over the summers of 1975 and 1977, I had research fellowships at the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. In residence, also, during those two summers at IHS was Hayek as a senior research scholar. I viewed it as a great honor to meet a man whose writings had heavily influenced my own views on economics and politics, and for both of those summers I had an office only one or two doors down from his. Hayek ...

REMINDER: Our zoom conference "The National Security State and the JFK Assassination" continues this Wednesday at 7 pm Eastern. To attend the conference, just register at our conference page. A zoom link will be sent to you. We are now moving into the medical-evidence portion of the conference. Our first presenter will be Douglas Horne, who served on the staff of the Assassination Records Review Board and who is the author of the watershed 5-volume book Inside the Assassination Records Review Board. Doug has pre-recorded his talk. It is 2 hours and 45 minutes long. We have posted Doug's speech online. Please watch it before Wednesday. That is your homework! But I promise: No pop quizzes! If you watch it beforehand, you will get much more out of the session, which will be devoted to Q&A. And you will get much more out of the next three presentations, all of which focus on matters relating to the fraudulent ...

Biden’s Immigration Crisis

by
The immigration crisis taking place at the U.S.-Mexico border confirms three points that I have been making for many years. The first point is that no matter who is elected president and no matter what new policies are adopted to resolve America’s decades-old immigration crisis, it won’t do any good. That’s because America’s system of immigration controls is an inherently defective system. That’s because it is based on the concept of “central planning,” a socialist concept that involves government planning of immigration. Central planning is an inherently defective system. Just ask anyone who lived in the Soviet Union or anyone who lives in Venezuela, Nicaragua, North Korea, or Cuba today. There is no way that a central planner can effectively plan the movements of millions of people, especially in the context of supply of and demand for labor in a complex labor market. The result ...

Post-Covid Policy Advice from Ludwig von Mises for Developing Countries

by
The coronavirus and the government responses with shutdowns and lockdowns, along with restrictions on international travel and disruptions of the global supply chains that crisscross countries and continents, have made a fuller and more rapid recovery difficult in the Western industrialized countries, but even more so in many places in what used to be called during the Cold War, ...

The Case for Freedom in Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, and Ayn Rand

by
Three names are widely associated with the cause of human freedom and economic liberty in the twentieth century: Friedrich A. Hayek, Ludwig von Mises, and Ayn Rand. Indeed, it can be argued that Hayek’s Road to Serfdom (1944) and Constitution of Liberty (1960), Mises’s Socialism (1936) and Human Action (1949), and Rand’s novels The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged ...
