Opposing America’s Participation in World War II

by
Even in the face of ongoing catastrophes arising out of U.S. interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East, proponents of empire and intervention still trot out America’s entry into World War II to justify their imperialist, militarist, and interventionist philosophy. World War II was the “good” war, they say — a necessary intervention, one that saved the United States and the rest of the world from Nazi Germany. Let’s examine the consequences of World War II to see how “good” that war really was. When Germany invaded Poland, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany, with the aim of freeing the Polish people from Nazi tyranny. At the end of the war, it’s true that that goal had been achieved. Nazi Germany had been defeated and the Polish people were no longer under Nazi control. That’s one reason that Great Britain, France, and the United States celebrate World War II as the “good” war. But the Polish people ...

Is Pinochet’s Assassination of Letelier Still a Conspiracy Theory?

by
In a story by John Dinges, Newsweek is reporting that the U.S. State Department has released long-secret documents “showing convincing evidence from as early as 1978 that [Chilean dictator Augusto) Pinochet gave the order to commit an act of terrorism in Washington, D.C., and murder Orlando Letelier and an American woman.” The article points out that “five U.S. presidents — from Jimmy Carter to George W. Bush — had a potentially lethal weapon to use against him but never unleashed it.” In other words, the U.S. government kept the evidence it was holding secret for more than 35 years. Who says U.S. officials can’t keep secrets, especially when it comes to assassination? And, yes, in case you’re wondering, the CIA did play a role in this cover-up. According to the article, “A CIA Report dated April 28, 1978, and sent to Washington showed that the agency already had proof of Pinochet’s involvement in the killing. ‘[Chile’s Directorate of National Intelligence, ...

How Can Anyone Still Be an Interventionist?

by
Given the ongoing disasters in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and the rest of the Middle East, how can anyone in his right mind still be an interventionist? Look at Iraq. The U.S. invasion and multi-year occupation of that country was supposed to bring a paradise of peace, prosperity, and harmony to the country. That’s what killing all those Iraqis was about — sacrificing them for the greater good of a beautiful society. Wasn’t it called Operation Iraqi Freedom? Yet, what do we have now? We have a country with a regime that exercises such totalitarian powers as arbitrary arrests, unreasonable searches, indefinite incarceration, torture, suppression of speech, state-established religion, and assassination. Of course, as most everyone knows, Iraq is also a country that is filled with ongoing death, destruction, chaos, and crisis. That’s what Operation Iraqi Freedom has brought to Iraq. Remind me again: What did killing all those Iraqis accomplish? What did all those U.S. soldiers die for or get maimed ...

The Crisis of the Now: Distracted and Diverted from the Ever-Encroaching Police State

by
“When a population becomes distracted by trivia, when cultural life is redefined as a perpetual round of entertainments, when serious public conversation becomes a form of baby talk, when, in short, a people become an audience and their public business a vaudeville act, then a nation finds itself at risk: culture-death is a clear possibility.”—Author Neil Postman Caught ...

The Cure for Widespread Murder in American Society

by
Not surprisingly, yesterday’s shootings in Virginia have brought out the gun-control crowd. Thus, the publication of FFF’s new ebook Freedom and Security: The Second Amendment and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms by Scott McPherson could not be more timely. The implicit assumption of the gun-grabbing segment of American society is that widespread gun ownership equals widespread murders ...
