The CIA and the Assassination of Orlando Letelier

On September 21, 1976, a car bomb exploded on the streets of Washington, D.C., killing former Chilean official Orlando Letelier and his young assistant Ronni Moffitt. Since it was clearly a case of premeditated, cold-blooded murder of two innocent people, the killers were subject to being sentenced to death or life in prison. Yet, consider what actually happened to some of the people implicated in the murders: Michael Townley, who put together the murder team and actually participated in the car bombing itself. Federal officials agreed to a plea bargain that enabled him to get out of prison after only five years. After that, federal officials admitted Townley into their Federal Witness Protection Program, where he has been under federal protection ever since. Ever since the assassination of former Chilean official Orlando Letelier in 1976, the official position, promoted by both the mainstream press and the Washington establishment, was that former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who the U.S. helped install into power, ordered the hit on Letelier. Yet, as I pointed out in my 3-part article “The Assassination of Orlando Letelier and Ronni Moffitt,” which was published in the January, February, and March 2017 issues of FFF’s monthly journal, Future of Freedom, that position is problematic. First, though, a recap of the facts. In 1970, a self-avowed Marxist socialist named Salvador Allende was democratically elected president of Chile. Amidst all the furor over President Trump’s suggestion that “both sides” are to blame in the recent violence in Charlottesville, I wish to weigh in on what I hold is a major contributing factor to the Charlottesville mayhem, including the killing of 32-year-old Heather Heyer: the U.S. government’s death machine, which has been killing millions of people in foreign lands for more than 50 years.
