The Omnipotent Power to Assassinate Any of Us

by
Suppose an American citizen who is openly critical of governmental policy decides to take a trip overseas, say to Yemen. Suppose that President Obama orders the military and the CIA to assassinate him while he is traveling within Yemen. Suppose the order is carried out and that that American is, in fact, assassinated. Most Americans would consider such an assassination to be a grave wrong. They might not like the criticism that the American was leveling against the federal government, but they would ardently oppose the idea of assassinating the man based simply on the fact that he was criticizing the government. Yet, in post-9/11 America nothing could be done to rectify this wrong. The sad truth is that we now live in a country in which the president has the omnipotent power to assassinate any of us for any reason he wants. We simply have to trust him with this supreme power. We have to hope and pray that when ...

Crises: A Gun-Grabber’s Best Friend

by
After President Obama’s election in 2008, gun buyers went on a buying spree. Prices of assault rifles, ammunition, and high-magazine clips soared. The buying continued unabated for the four years of Obama’s first term. Throughout that time, gun-control advocates ridiculed the gun buyers. They called them overreacting paranoids, pointing out that Obama was doing nothing to initiate gun-control measures and that, in fact, he had no interest in doing so. But the buyers ignored the ridicule and just continued buying. Today, the gun-control crowd isn’t ridiculing the gun buyers anymore. No one is accusing them of being paranoid. Meanwhile, gun shops are selling out of everything. As things have turned out, it was the gun buyers who were the smart ones. They were smart to ignore the ridicule from the statists. They were smart to get their guns, ammo, and clips while they still could. The dumb ones were the ones who placed their trust in statist representations that Obama had no interest ...

The CIA’s Murder of Frank Olson Goes to Court

by
Yesterday, the New York Times carried a fascinating article entitled "Suit Planned Over Death of Man C.I.A. Drugged." According to the article, the children of a former federal official named Frank Olson are suing the CIA for murdering their father in 1953 as part of the agency’s infamous MKULTRA program. The article is of special interest to me because I wrote about the Olson case in the August issue of our monthly journal Future of Freedom, in my article, “The Evil of the National Security State, Part 5.” (Part 5 is not yet posted online but is available to subscribers now. Subscribe here.) Part 5 revolves around the book A Terrible Mistake: The Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA’s Secret Cold War Experiments

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 Just Ditch Medicare and Medicaid I just don’t get conservatives. They say they support individual freedom, economic liberty, free markets, limited government, and the Constitution. They also say they oppose socialism, interventionism, collectivism, and paternalism. They point out that such isms just don’t work. Okay, fine. Then why don’t conservatives call for the immediate repeal of Medicare and Medicaid? Why ...
