Karma Over Russia?

by
Not surprisingly, the mainstream media is aghast that President-elect Donald Trump is not automatically deferring to the CIA and its pronouncement that Russia intervened in the U.S. presidential election with the intent of helping Trump defeat his Democratic Party opponent Hillary Clinton.  Never mind that the CIA has provided no evidence to support its claims. In the eyes of the mainstream media and the national-security establishment, that’s irrelevant. Trump’s responsibility, they hold, is to automatically, without question or challenge, defer to the authority of the CIA and accept whatever it says. Of course, one big problem here is that the CIA, along with the rest of the national-security establishment, sometimes lies. In fact, CIA officials are expected to lie if they feel that “national security” depends on it. Recall when CIA Director Richard Helms was asked under oath by Congress about the U.S government’s meddling in Chile’s presidential elections. He denied that the U.S. ...

Workplace Smoking

by
While making a brief trip recently to a place of business in a local outdoor mall in central Florida, I noticed that a new sign had been posted on the information board in the middle of one of the sidewalks: “Smoking in Workplaces Is Prohibited by Law.” The sign was gone the next week, replaced by an ad for a movie at the mall’s theater, so I was glad that I had written down what was on it. Apparently, these signs change every so often, depending on how long organizations or places of business want to advertise something. I remember that the smoking sign also contained a phone number for people to call for more information. And in small print at the bottom of the sign was the website address for Tobacco Free Florida (TFF). It turns out that TFF is not some private anti-smoking organization that was trying to draw attention to Florida smoking laws. TFF is a state ...

The Problem Is Foreign Interventionism, Not Muslims

by
With Donald Trump’s accession to the presidency, the U.S. anti-Muslim crusade is going into full swing. According to an article in the November 14 issue of the Washington Post, hate crimes against Muslims hit their highest level since 2001. An article in yesterday’s Post stated that four mosques have received letters stating that Trump will do to Muslims what Hitler “did to the Jews.” Ever since the 9/11 attacks, religious bigots have used that event as the excuse to go after Muslims. The problem with their mindset — or at least one problem with their mindset — is that they letting their religious bigotry prevent them from recognizing that the root cause of anti-American terrorism is not based on religion but instead on the U.S. government’s interventionist foreign policy in the Middle East and Afghanistan. In other words, if there had never been the Persian Gulf intervention, the tens years of deadly sanctions against the Iraqi people, the stationing of U.S. ...

Washington’s Meddling in Foreign Elections

by
As U.S. officials continue to accuse Russia of meddling with the U.S. presidential election, an accusation that they have provided no evidence whatsoever to support, let’s review some of the U.S. government’s history of meddling with elections in others countries. 1. In 1951, the democratically elected parliament of Iran elected a man named Mohammad Mossadegh to be Iran’s prime minister. ...

The U.S. Government’s Power to Assassinate

by
Throughout the presidential campaign, including the presidential debates, among the issues that have not been raised or discussed is the federal government’s power to assassinate. The power to assassinate is now consider an accepted power of the federal government. In fact, most people, especially mainstream reporters and pundits, treat federal assassinations with blasé and nonchalance. Most people undoubtedly believe that ...

Should America Pardon the U.S. National Security State?

by
Several weeks ago, contemporaneously with the release of Oliver Stone’s excellent movie Snowden, friends and admirers of Edward Snowden launched a campaign to have President Obama pardon him for disclosing the NSA’s super-secret illegal surveillance scheme to the American people and the world. The reasons for the pardon request were excellently summarized in an op-ed that appeared in the ...
