No Debate Over the Welfare-Warfare State

by
Unfortunately, there has been no debate and discussion in the 2020 presidential race over the two greatest infringements on the liberty and well-being of the American people — the welfare state and the national-security state. That shouldn’t surprise us though given that both Republicans and Democrats, along with the mainstream press, are so wedded to the New Deal/Great Society revolution that began in the 1930s and the national-security state conversion that took place in the 1940s. At least Republican Ronald Reagan would periodically take swipes at Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, pointing out how this entire socialist paradigm had done so much harm to America. Reagan could also eloquently point out the virtues of the free market and voluntary charity. Not Donald Trump. He is as committed to the New Deal/Great Society paradigm, especially its crown jewels of Social Security and Medicare, as Joe Biden is. That’s why we have heard ...

Needed: A Faith in Freedom

Why is it that some libertarians are scared to death to call for the repeal of Social Security and Medicare? Oh sure, they’ll come up with all sorts of Rube Goldberg-like schemes for reforming these two socialist programs. But the minute that another libertarian advocates the immediate repeal of these programs, these reform-oriented libertarians have a conniption fit. It’s not like reform-oriented libertarians don’t understand the concept of immediate repeal of bad government programs. Take drug laws as an example. Many (but certainly not all) reform-minded libertarians do not hesitate to advocate for the immediate repeal of drug laws. They don’t come up with Rube Goldberg-like schemes for reforming the drug war. And they don’t call for phasing out the drug war over the next 40 or 50 years. They make the case for ending the drug war now, not later. So, why not the same ...

We Are All Victims of the Deep State’s Con Game

by
We’re run by the Pentagon, we’re run by Madison Avenue, we’re run by television, and as long as we accept those things and don’t revolt we’ll have to go along with the stream to the eventual avalanche.... As long as we go out and buy stuff, we’re at their mercy… We all live in a little Village. Your Village may be different from other people’s Villages, but we are all prisoners.— Patrick McGoohan This is not an election. This is a con game, a scam, a grift, a hustle, a bunko, a swindle, a flimflam, a gaffle, and a bamboozle. In this carefully choreographed scheme to strip the American citizenry of our power and our rights, “we the people” are nothing more than marks, suckers, stooges, mugs, rubes, or gulls. We are victims of the Deep State’s confidence game. Every confidence game has six essential stages: 1) the foundation to lay the groundwork for the illusion; 2) the approach whereby ...

Incrementalism Versus the Libertarian Non-Aggression Principle

by
The modern-day libertarian movement is besieged by statist proposals to reform the welfare-warfare state way of life in which Americans live. Included among such reform proposals are things like Social Security “privatization,” school vouchers, health-savings accounts, immigration “reform,” and many more. As I have indicated in previous articles, reform-oriented libertarians have long maintained that these ...
