“Yesterday, in United States v. Playboy Entertainment Group, the Supreme Court struck down a 1996 federal law that restricted sexually explicit adult channels’ broadcasting to late-night hours. Despite people’s concern for children’s exposure to the pornographic programming, the Court made the right decision by respecting private ownership, the First Amendment, free trade, technology, and parental authority. The Playboy Channel has a right to air its programs on channels that viewers voluntarily purchase from their cable company. If parents do not want their children to watch naked women on TV, they can request targeted blocking of questionable channels. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy stated, “The citizen is entitled to seek out or reject certain ideas or influences without government interference or control.Technology expands the capacity to choose; and it denies the potential of this revolution if we assume the government is best positioned to make these choices for us.” Protecting children is the responsibility of the parents, and the Supreme Court recognized and defended this naked truth.”
