“President Clinton did everything to avoid Greek demonstrators during his recent trip to Greece. The Greeks were protesting the U.S. government’s war in Kosovo. Clinton responded by apologizing not for his own conduct but rather for the U.S. government’s participation in suppressing democracy in Greece 30 years ago! Clinton suggested that this antidemocratic act was motivated by the Cold War. But does that explain the suppression of democracy in Chile? In Guatemala? The real criteria for a foreign ruler’s survival, elected or not? Whether he does Washington’s bidding, especially if he’s already been bought with U.S. foreign aid.”
