Drug War Moves to Hollywood
by
Andy Falkof, July 2000
"Today, Gen. Barry McCaffrey, director of the Office of National Drug
Control Policy, will try to convince Congress that the drug war's newest line of attack should be in Hollywood. His office has already offered financial incentives to television networks to air anti-drug messages, but he concedes, "As powerful as television is, some experts believe that movies have an even stronger impact on young people." Certainly drug abuse is a problem, but is it the government's responsibility to intervene in an individual's personal decisions? And should the government muscle it's views and agendas into television, movies, and others forms of private media? If McCaffrey keeps it up, he might even surpass Goebbels' accomplishment."
