Abolish the INS
by Andy Falkof, June 2000

"Presidential candidate George W. Bush recently spoke at the League of United Latin American Citizens' 71st national convention, where he said, if elected, he would split the Immigration and Nationalization Service into two departments. This would somehow facilitate Bush's intention to "reform the INS to make it more welcoming to immigrants." How does making one whole into two halves change anything? If Bush really loved immigrants, he would advocate abolishing the INS altogether. Reformatting the structure of the agency will not put an end to the abuse, humiliation, and repatriation the INS inflicts on immigrants. Bush speaks of the Latinos enriching our country with their faith in God, their family values, and their work ethic. Very nice sentiments, Gov. Bush, but do your policies match your love of immigrants or are you just pandering to a voting bloc that favors Gore?"
