Immigration Laws Kill 58
by Andy Falkof, June 2000

"Yesterday morning, British customs officers stumbled upon a Dutch truck that contained the bodies of 58 Asian immigrants that tried to enter England illegally. Their deaths were probably due to suffocation from the over-heated, poorly ventilated cargo bay. British politicians from both the Labor and the Conservative parties have been quick to condemn the immoral, criminal smugglers that bring foreigners to British shores. Prime Minister Tony Blair said this tragedy proves the importance of eradicating the "evil trade in people." While vehement outrage is certainly warranted, we need to ask, Is the problem the smugglers, or the laws that make immigration and human transport a crime? These people tried to enter England at great personal and financial cost in order to forge a better life for themselves -- they risked their lives and lost. Wouldn't their lives have been saved if they had entered England on a bus or a plane like normal human beings instead of like livestock in the back of a truck? Couldn't tragedies like this be prevented if the English government treated immigrants as economic and cultural assets rather than as wretched bilge rats? While Parliament is busy discussing how to thwart evil lawbreakers, they fail to recognize the evil in the immigration laws themselves."
