Conservatives Should Repeal, Not Reform
by Jacob G. Hornberger, October 1999

"George W. Bush and John McCain are fighting over which one of them is the true conservative and the real reformer. But what does conservatism have to do with reform of socialistic government programs? I thought conservatives were devoted to 'free enterprise, private property, and limited government.' For example, why are conservatives fighting to retain and reform Social Security, the crown jewel of the socialistic welfare state? Isn't Social Security the absolute embodiment of the Marxian principle, 'From each according to his ability; to each according to his need'? Unfortunately, as we have learned both here and in Russia, when a society is socialistic, conservatives sacrifice their devotion to freedom to conserving the status quo."
