Political Bribery
by Jacob G. Hornberger, October 1999

"Bribery is considered a crime, but not during presidential elections. Every four years, we are treated to the spectacle of political bribery by Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. The Republican candidates always offer people income-tax reductions in return for their votes. Yet, everyone knows it'll never happen; after all, Republicans have had control over both houses of Congress and have actually fought to increase government spending. The Democratic candidates always offer people government grants, subsidies, and programs in return for their votes. Unfortunately, Democrats always deliver! How many people feel humiliated at being bribed with their own money? How many people recognize the impropriety of the entire process?"
