Immigration Policy Hypocrisy
by Jacob G. Hornberger, October 1999

"The pure, pristine hypocrisy of Republicans is reflected in the case of Elian Gonzalez. Republican presidential candidates are vehemently protesting the INS's plans to return the boy to Cuba, suggesting that communism is so horrific that the boy should be permitted to remain in the U.S. rather than be returned to Cuba. Oh, yeah? Well, then why have Republicans for years been supporting the Clinton administration's involuntary repatriation of Cuban refugees (including women and children) back into communism? The Republican presidential candidates are suggesting that the boy's father should be free to come here and live with his son. Does this mean that they are now willing to open the U.S. immigration gates to all Cuban fathers (and mothers) who wish to bring their children to the U.S.? Why one and not the others?"
