Joseph Margulies is one of the nation’s leading attorneys in the defense of civil liberties, especially since 9/11. Future generations of Americans will forever be indebted to him for his courageous and principled stand against kidnapping, torture, rendition, military tribunals, and other “war on terrorism” infringements on liberty and for his ardent defense of such fundamental procedural rights as due process of law, right to counsel, right to confront witnesses, trial by jury, and habeas corpus.

Joe is an attorney with the MacArthur Justice Center and is associate clinical professor at Northwestern Law School in Chicago, one of the top ten laws schools in the country. He was lead counsel in the U.S. Supreme Court of Rasul vs. Bush, which involved detentions at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, and Habib vs. Bush, which involved the U.S. government’s rendition program. He recently argued the Supreme Court case involving Shawqi Omar and Mohammad Munaf, two American citizens held prisoner in Iraq by U.S. military officials.

His book Guantanamo and the Abuse of Presidential Power is one of the finest, most easy to read, and most passionate summaries of the civil-liberties issues facing our nation. His articles have appeared in such publications as the Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune.
