A New Enemy!

Well, those who were anguishing that the United States
was without an official enemy after the capture of Saddam
Hussein (the “new Adolf Hitler”) can sleep well
again: America has a new enemy — an even newer,
younger, and more dangerous Hitler! (You’ll recall
that this psychological phenomenon — “official
enemy lack” — afflicted many federal officials,
especially those in the Pentagon, after the fall of the
Soviet Union.)
The “newest Hitler” who provides yet another
justification for the invasion of Iraq and the continued
occupation of that country is Muqtada al-Sadr, an Iraqi
Shi’ite Muslim whose father was killed by the old
“new Hitler” — Saddam Hussein. According
to an op-ed entitled “Take a Deep Breath” by
New York Times columnist David Brooks , for
example, Muqtada is a “lowlife hoodlum,”
“ruthless and hyperpoliticized.” Even worse,
Muqtada has been “spectacularly successful in
winning popular support,” even though he is a
“young, hotheaded murderer who terrorizes people
wherever he goes.” Worst of all, “he has taken
this opportunity to make a desperate bid for power”
in Iraq!
Unfortunately, Brooks forgot to refer to Muqtada as a
“new Hitler” who, if left free to seek political
power in Iraq, could ultimately take over the reins of
power in that country, amass weapons of mass destruction
that could threaten the United States and mankind, align
himself with Iran and international terrorists, and
actually take over the entire world — just like
Saddam Hussein and Adolf Hitler (the real one)! He must
be captured or killed now, just like Saddam Hussein and
his two sons!
Spread the word among the troops in Iraq: “The
latest cause for which you are dying is to protect the
American people and the Iraqi people and mankind from
Muqtada al-Sadr, the ‘newest Hitler.’”
So, rest easy — we now have a “new official
enemy.” Increase the Pentagon’s budget —
now! Enact PATRIOT 2 — now! Any delay is dangerous!
“Hitler” must be stopped now, before it is too
late! Munich-style appeasement is not the way to go!
National security is at stake! Trust us!
Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that people in
Afghanistan, another locus of the U.S. government’s
“war on terrorism,” are making a killing
producing poppies, which means that there will now be an
overabundance of heroin dealers in the United States to
target as “new drug-dealing Hitlers.”
So, as David Brooks would put it, get a grip, take a deep
breath, and relax — there are plenty of potential
“new Hitlers” around to keep people’s
juices roiling.
